Microbiome Event
Transdisciplilnary Interventions at Gent University Museum (GUM), June 7th 2023
How are the smallest creatures in the world informing our lives? Where do we encounter them and how can we discover ways of engaging with them? On June 7 2023, we invited a group to join us and to learn with us, exploring the microbiology of our surroundings and different aspects of bacterial life. The event led visitors on a guided tour through the Ghent University Museum where they met scientists, artists, and philosophers and were surprised by some practical experiments and inspired conversations. Interventions were given by Marjan De Mey (fungal bacterial co-cultivation), Giada Lo Re (microbiome and plastics), Sarah Lebeer (Vaginal biome), Bartaku (biofilms in cooling towers) and Christina Stadlbauer (sourdough bread enhanced with human biome). Kristien Hens was leading discussions around ethical implications. Accompanied by sounds from bacteria with Per Hüttner, Till Bovermann and Robert Oostenveld, we concluded the day over fermented drinks and snacks.
